School of Medicine Trainee Achievements – Mohan lab

The Department of Neuroscience is proud to announce the recent achievements of UConn School of Medicine student trainees, who have conducted research in the Mohan lab.

Sonny Caplash, M.D. will be joining the residency program in Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sonny remarks, ‘My interest in ophthalmology began with a service trip to an eye hospital in India prior to medical school. This interest flourished into a passion during my time working with Dr. Mohan exploring corneal fibrosis. My experience in that lab and the mentorship provided was invaluable to my training and development.” Sonny was presented the UConn School of Medicine Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology at the 2020 graduation virtual ceremony.
Gwendolyn Schultz
Gwendolyn Schultz was awarded the third prize for her virtual poster studying the role of Corneal Schwann cells in Injury. This award was presented at the New England Ophthalmological Society Annual Hecht Poster Contest in June 2020. Gwen plans on doing her residency training in Ophthalmology upon graduation.
Nicholas Saba
Nicholas Saba, M.D. will be joining residency program in Ophthalmology at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, New York. Nick comments, “I was grateful to be given the opportunity to expand upon my prior training in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) from the Smith Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital and apply the laser model of AMD in the Mohan lab to help unravel a new druggable target for this chronic disease”.
