A Path from the Army ROTC into Vision Research

Mary Katherine Eddy, a sophomore in the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps and majoring in Physiology and Neurobiology at UConn, is training for leadership skills aimed towards a future career in medicine. Mary Katherine has received an IDEA grant award from the Office of Undergraduate Research to conduct research on Schwann cells in corneal repair. She will be mentored by the dual team of neuroscience faculty, Drs. Mohan and Bargagna-Mohan, in the neuroscience department at UConn Health. She says “the Mohan Lab immediately interested me as someone whose family has been afflicted by age related macular degeneration. An exciting project I plan to undertake is studying the role of Schwann cells in corneal nerve repair, as I would like to contribute to the understanding of corneal pain after ocular injuries, which is a concern for homeland security and in the battlefield. I am very grateful for the opportunity to work in and learn from the Mohan lab!”
