The University of Connecticut Pediatric Residency is committed to continue attracting highly qualified residents through a fair and effective process. We have been fortunate to attract a large group of talented applicants each year, so our process begins with screening of the information provided through ERAS, continues with a structure and relevant interview and concludes with a ranking process that utilizes all that we have learned about each candidate. We have been pleased with the outcome of this approach in enrolling talented and successful residents.
- Review of Qualifications: The information provided through ERAS is assessed for academic achievement, extracurricular contributions, the quality of the personal statement and the testimony of others. Since we do not have the capacity to interview all who apply, we use this assessment to identify those to invite to interview.
- The Interview: The University of Connecticut Pediatric Residency Program uses an interviewing technique called Behavior Based Interviewing. Behavior based interviewing focuses on experiences, behaviors, knowledge, skills and abilities that are job related. It is based on the belief that past behavior and performance predicts future behavior and performance. It requires that interviewers be thoroughly familiar with the record of their interviewee, and it results an enjoyable exchange in learning about the accomplished and talented applicants who come to see our program.
- Selection: After the interview and documents are evaluated, all the information is used by members of the Pediatric Resident Clinical Competence Committee to generate a rank score, by which the applicant is compared to the others in creating our match list. 7:15 a.m. Arrival – Introduction to the Program: Pediatric Residency Program Director
8:30 a.m. Attend Rounds
9:15 a.m. Faculty Interview
10:15 a.m. Tour of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center
12 p.m. Lunch with Residents
1 p.m. Presentation of the Program and the Hartford Area
1:30 p.m. Meet with Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics
2 p.m. Wrap-up with Pediatric Program Director
So the applicants can get to know us even better, an informal evening get-together is scheduled for the applicants and current pediatric residents at local restaurant. If candidates have time and choose to participate, the setting and discussions will give them a better idea of what is like to live and become a pediatrician here.
