The University of Connecticut Pediatric Residency Program is designed to provide its residents a progressive educational experience with increasing patient care and supervisory responsibility over a three-year period. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide educational experiences that prepare residents to be competent general pediatricians, able to provide comprehensive coordinated care to a broad range of pediatric patients. The educational experiences are designed to develop competencies and skills needed to practice general pediatrics of high quality in the community, and to have sufficient familiarity with the fields of subspecialty pediatrics to participate as a team member in the care of patients with chronic and complex disorders.
What is an individualized curriculum?
All of our residents complete a required number of rotations in ambulatory, inpatient and subspecialty care. However, we allow a full 20 weeks of individualized curriculum to help residents prepare for their future career goals. We offer this individualized curriculum in a “pathway” model. Residents can choose from established rotations or create their own.

- 4 weeks Primary Care
- 4 weeks Behavior and Development
- 12 weeks discretionary (subspecialty or individualized rotations)
- 4 weeks vacation
PL-2
- 8 weeks Inpatient Service (including 4 weeks night team)
- 8 weeks Pediatric ICU
- 4 weeks Emergency Department
- 4 weeks NICU
- 4 weeks Primary Care
- 4 weeks Adolescent Medicine
- 16 weeks discretionary
- 4 weeks vacation
PL-3
- 14 weeks Inpatient Service (including 6 weeks of night team)
- 4 weeks of Pediatric ICU or Inpatient Service (resident choice)
- 4 weeks Emergency Department
- 6 weeks Primary Care
- 20 weeks discretionary
- 4 weeks vacation

The program is in full compliance with the ACGME duty hour standards. We continually review our compliance and make adjustments as required.
