Combined Internal Medicine Residency and Geriatric Fellowship

The UConn Internal Medicine – Geriatrics integrated residency and fellowship provides an innovative opportunity to train physician leaders in Geriatric Medicine by integrating some of the fellowship experiences across the Internal Medicine residency, achieving geriatric competencies in a four-year program.  This enhanced geriatric training occurs during ambulatory care blocks in PGY1-PGY3 years, allowing more time in the fourth year for professional development. Trainees receive ongoing mentorship and career guidance from the Center on Aging faculty with numerous  opportunities to participate in research and scholarship.

The program description for residency training in Internal Medicine at UConn is outlined here. The PGY4 rotations comprise 6 to 9 months of the trainees’ time.  The length of required rotations depends on the individualized learning plan created by the trainee and program director, reflecting career goals and competencies achieved to date.   The PGY4 continues to see patients monthly at the skilled nursing home and outpatients weekly in the office practice.

The 4-year training program is outlined below. Please contact Dr. Rathier at rathier@uchc.edu for further information on this exciting opportunity.
