- A one-month elective is currently available for chief residents.
- An away elective, be it clinical or research-based, is a rotation at an institution that is not affiliated with the UConn School of Medicine.
- Away electives outside of the United States are rarely approved.
- Away electives requiring prior approval:
- Any rotation that has educational value and fulfills requirements of the RRC for that discipline but is not required.
- Prior approval must be received from the program director.
- Once all paperwork is submitted to the Graduate Medical Education Office, the DIO will determine the merits of the request for an away elective.

- Educational rationale for requesting an away elective.
- Program director’s support for this experience.
- Evaluation tool used to evaluate the resident’s experience.
- Program’s effort to identify funding support for this experience.
