Away Electives

  • A one-month elective is currently available for chief residents.
  • An away elective, be it clinical or research-based, is a rotation at an institution that is not affiliated with the UConn School of Medicine.
  • Away electives outside of the United States are rarely approved.
  • Away electives requiring prior approval:
    • Any rotation that has educational value and fulfills requirements of the RRC for that discipline but is not required.
    • Prior approval must be received from the program director.
    • Once all paperwork is submitted to the Graduate Medical Education Office, the DIO will determine the merits of the request for an away elective.
    • The paperwork required to apply for an educationally valuable away elective is available in the Graduate Medical Education Office. Essential components of the necessary paperwork include:
      • Educational rationale for requesting an away elective.
      • Program director’s support for this experience.
      • Evaluation tool used to evaluate the resident’s experience.
      • Program’s effort to identify funding support for this experience.
