Cancer and Bone Health Interdisciplinary Clinic

The Cancer and Bone Health Clinic, located in the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center, is focused on the maintenance of bone health in patients previously treated or currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Many important cancer therapies can compromise bone health leading to bone loss and osteoporosis and consequently to bone fractures that can impact daily function or quality of life. At the Cancer and Bone Health Clinic, evaluation of bone health is achieved through a complete medical history, physical examination, bone density testing, and laboratory testing. Treatment is tailored to the individual patient and their medical conditions and coordinated with our team of medical and surgical oncologists, radiation therapist, and nursing staff.

Evaluated therapies include:

  • Hormonal therapies such as aromatase inhibitors or anti-estrogen therapy for breast cancer patients or androgen deprivation therapy for men with prostate cancer
  • Chemotherapeutic agents that can cause direct damage to bone or can cause premature menopause (loss of monthly periods) in women and hypogonadism (lack of erectile function) in young men
  • Radiation therapy to the pelvic region, especially for women over the age of 65 for cervical, anal, and rectal cancers
  • Steroid treatments (glucocorticoids) included in therapeutic regimens
  • Spread (metastasis) of cancer to the bone from the original tumor site
  • Long-term and/or monthly bone-modifying agents (most often used in tumors that have spread to bone) that can lead to rare but serious complications including osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fractures. *Note: these conditions can also be seen in those on non-cancer related treatment for osteoporosis
