Fellowship Overview
- Our academic year is divided into 13 blocks (4 weeks/block).
- Fellows rotate between inpatient, outpatient and research blocks during their 3 years.
- Fellows maintain a continuity clinic with their own patient panel.
- Departmental didactic sessions are held on Wednesday afternoon and attended by faculty and fellows and cover various topics and include a number of multidisciplinary joint conferences.
Overview by Training Year
*Note that this varies slightly per year as we are a four fellow total program; ultimately will have the same total number of inpatient/outpatient blocks by completion.
First Year Fellow
- The focus of your first year of fellowship is to develop your skills as a clinical gastroenterology and hepatologist.
- Inpatient Experience
- Between 5-9 blocks on the inpatient service caring for primary GI patients and seeing inpatient and ER consults. The fellow is directly supervised by an attending physician.
- Outpatient Experiences
- Weekly Fellows Continuity Clinic, (1/2 day clinic).
- Outpatient Experience (approximately 32 blocks/year).
- Rotate among a variety of subspecialty clinics and procedures (Hepatology, Motility, IBD, Cystic Fibrosis, Weight loss, etc.) to continue their growth towards independent practice
- Additional general GI clinic each week
- Research Pursuits
- Fellows spend about 4 blocks on research. During this time, fellows meet with program director to identify research interests, establish a research mentor and begin to develop research protocol and question.
Second Year Fellow
- The goals for our second year fellow is to establish and carry out a research project and to gain better insight into his or her future career goals as well as to hone their clinical acumen.
- Research Pursuits
- Fellows spend about 7 to 8 blocks dedicated to research during the second year of fellowship.
- They are supervised by their research mentor and Scholarly Oversight Committee (SOC).
- Outpatient Experiences
- Weekly Fellows Continuity Clinic, (1/2 day clinic).
- Outpatient Experience (2 blocks).
- Rotate among a variety of sub-specialty clinics and procedures (Hepatology, Motility, Cystic Fibrosis, Weight loss, etc.) to continue their growth towards independent practice.
- Additional general GI clinic each week
- Inpatient Experience
- Fellows spend about 1 to 3 blocks on the inpatient service caring for primary GI patients and seeing inpatient and ER consults. The fellow is directly supervised by an attending physician.
- As a senior fellow they are expected to demonstrate progress towards independent practice.
Third Year Fellow
- The objective in the final year of training is to complete your research projects and tailor your schedule to meet your academic, clinical and research needs as you prepare to graduate. We recognize that our graduates may choose to pursue a research career, clinical position, or continue his or her training in a subspecialty field and thus, will require an individualized approach to ensure his or her needs are met.
- Research Pursuits
- Fellows spend 5 to 9 blocks dedicated to research during the third year of fellowship
- They are supervised by their research mentor and Scholarly Oversight Committee (SOC).
- Outpatient Experiences
- Weekly Fellows Continuity Clinic, (1/2 day clinic).
- Outpatient Experience (2 blocks).
- Rotate among a variety of subspecialty clinics and procedures (Hepatology, Motility, Cystic Fibrosis, Weight loss, etc.) to continue their growth towards independent practice.
- Inpatient Experience
- Fellows spend about 2 to 3 blocks on the inpatient service caring for primary GI patients and seeing inpatient and ER consults. The fellow is directly supervised by an attending physician.
- As a senior fellow they are expected to demonstrate greater progress towards independent practice.
