Fellowship Overview
- Our academic year is divided into 13 blocks (4 weeks/block).
- Fellows rotate between inpatient, integrated clinical care, and research blocks during their 3 years.
- Fellows maintain a continuity clinic with their own patient panel.
- Departmental didactic sessions are held on Wednesday afternoons and attended by faculty and fellows and cover various topics and include a number of multidisciplinary joint conferences.
Overview by Training Year
*Note that this varies slightly per year as we are a four fellow total program; ultimately will have the same total number of inpatient/outpatient blocks by completion.
First Year Fellow
- The focus of your first year of fellowship is to develop your skills as a clinical gastroenterology and hepatologist.
- Inpatient Experience
- Fellows will spend time on inpatient service caring for primary GI patients and seeing inpatient and ER consults. The fellow is directly supervised by an attending physician.
- Integrated Clinical Care Elective
- Outpatient experience
- Procedures: goal of 2 procedure blocks a week
- Outpatient clinic in the morning including Hartford clinics: motility, hepatology, general GI
- Inpatient assistance
- IR rounds weekly on Tuesday with Dr. Salazar
- Assist inpatient fellow with procedures and consult in the afternoon (morning if exceedingly busy)
- Outpatient experience
- Fellows Continuity Clinic
- Fellows have their own patients weekly
- Tuesday or Thursday afternoons
- Research Pursuits
- During this time, fellows meet with program director and Division Chief to identify research interests, establish a research mentor and begin to develop research protocol and question. Please see section on research for details.
Second Year Fellow
- The goal for our second-year fellow is to hone her or his clinical acumen and establish and carry out a research project. The goal of this year is also to gain better insight into his or her future career goals
- Research Pursuits
- Second year fellows will have more dedicated time for research in their block schedule
- They are supervised by their research mentor and Scholarly Oversight Committee (SOC). Please see section on research for details.
- Integrated Clinical Care Elective

- Outpatient clinic in the morning including Hartford clinics: motility, hepatology, general GI
- Outpatient experience

Third Year Fellow
- The objective in the final year of training is to complete your research projects and tailor your schedule to meet your academic, clinical and research needs as you prepare to graduate. We recognize that our graduates may choose to pursue a research career, clinical position, or continue his or her training in a subspecialty field and thus, will require an individualized approach to ensure his or her needs are met.
- Research Pursuits
- Third year fellows will have the most dedicated time for research in their fellowship as a PGY-6
- They are supervised by their research mentor and Scholarly Oversight Committee (SOC).

- Integrated Clinical Care Experience:
- Procedures: goal of 2 procedure blocks a week
- Outpatient clinic in the morning including Hartford clinics: motility, hepatology, general GI
- Depending on career goals, this is a time to build up additional exposure to variety of sub-specialty clinics
- Inpatient Experience
- Fellows spend some time on the inpatient service caring for primary GI patients and seeing inpatient and ER consults. The fellow is directly supervised by an attending physician.
- As a senior fellow they are expected to demonstrate greater progress towards independent practice.
