The primary aim of the General Surgery Residency program at the University of Connecticut is to train competent surgeons in all facets of general surgery and enable them to pursue a career of choice. We strive to
provide our trainees with multiple options for a career when they complete the program, including clinical practice, academics, and research. Fellowship training is rapidly becoming necessary for most career choices following completion of a general surgery residency.

1. The program is to have a structure that develops residents in such a way that they will be able to apply for the appropriate
   fellowship for them and be a strong candidate for any fellowship program.
2. The program will be structured to provide a nurturing environment that promotes a diversity of career
   choices for our trainees. Further, resident well-being will be a priority.
3. The program will develop all of our trainees into leaders and educate them on safety and quality
   improvement.
4. The program will develop and emphasize the ability to teach others (students at all levels, nurses,
   mid-level practitioners, trainees in other specialties).
5. The program will utilize the most current education techniques including simulation to develop surgical
   knowledge and surgical skills in our trainees.
6. Trainees will play a prominent role in the programs leadership structure and have a significant role in
   developing program structure and curriculum.
