Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship

Welcome to the Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition Subspecialty Fellowship Program.

Our fellowship is a 3-year program that provides trainees with clinical, research and educational opportunities. The first year of fellowship focuses on building clinical experience, with the final two years focused on research. Throughout training, fellows are exposed to a breadth of gastrointestinal, hepatic, and nutritional disorders of varying complexity. Fellows rotate on our inpatient hospital service as well as maintain their own half-day outpatient clinic weekly. Our fellows become adept at endoscopies quickly within their first year of training and are exposed to a variety of additional procedures including video capsule endoscopy, percutaneous liver biopsy, esophageal pH-metry, esophageal impedance and anorectal manometry.

Fellows primarily spend their time at Connecticut Children’s which is the only free standing children’s hospital in the state of Connecticut, and serves as the home of the UConn Department of Pediatrics. Connecticut Children’s is a 187 bed facility designated Level 1 Trauma Center, which includes a Pediatric ER, PICU and NICU, all of which provide extensive clinical exposure to our learners. It hosts a Pediatric Residency Program with 60 residents and three chief residents, and 12 other pediatric medical and surgical fellowship programs.

The Connecticut Children’s Division of Digestive Diseases, Hepatology, and Nutrition is headed by Dr. Jeffrey Hyams, a world renowned expert in inflammatory bowel diseases and functional gastrointestinal disorders. The division has 11 physician-faculty members, 3 advanced nurse practitioners and a clinical psychologist. The division is well supported by experienced nurses, registered dietitians, and administrative staff. Connecticut Children's has a full range of pediatric subspecialists on staff, including seven pediatric surgeons.
