Our program aims to graduate well-rounded psychiatrists who are excellent clinicians, technically skilled in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, and able to work independently in any area within psychiatry. Our graduates are trained to interact in a polished, professional manner at all times, with patients, families, and all members of the health care team.

For residents interested in pursuing a subspecialty career, such as addictions, geriatrics, forensics, child and adolescent, consultation-liaison, or public psychiatry, we offer a variety of selectives in the third and fourth year of residency. This gives our residents a competitive edge when applying for fellowship training.

We also seek to engage each resident in scholarly activities such as oral presentations, poster presentations, and publications within UConn Health, and at state-wide, regional, or national meetings. For residents interested in exploring a research career, we provide ample opportunities to get involved in clinical and laboratory research.

We aim to prepare our residents to:

• Practice compassion for patients in everyday care and towards other members of the health care team, with attention to one’s own physical and mental well-being, and to the community with respect to community service and charity
• Strive for excellence in patient care, which involves evidence-based, compassionate, culturally-competent care
• Learn to work collaboratively and with collegiality in an interdisciplinary team, including competent team leadership
• Acquire foundation/training opportunities to be competitive for subspecialty training
• Acquire necessary skills to teach patients and colleagues
• Engage in quality initiatives that promote optimal systems-based, patient-centered care
• Conduct clinical, patient safety, quality improvement, and scholarly activities throughout their career
• Learn public health policies and community resources and be able to manage the health of populations and a personal panel of patients
