Psychotherapy Track

The psychotherapy track is a two-year elective experience available to any PGY2 through PGY4 resident. It includes a robust experience with a range of patients, using multiple psychotherapeutic modalities in a nurturing environment. Graduates of the program are well-prepared to enter advanced training in psychotherapy and to utilize various psychotherapies immediately after residency in their career of choice. Elements include:

  • Additional psychotherapy patients and hours in PGY3 and PGY4 years (which may include specialty clinic experiences):
    1. Five (5) or six (6) weekly psychotherapy sessions during PGY3 year
    2. Four (4) weekly psychotherapy sessions during PGY4 year
  • Weekly participation in the psychodynamic reading group for two years or more
  • Three of the following activities:
    1. A year-long training in CBT as a PGY3 (this is typically selected for all track participants)
    2. Six to twelve months rotating at the VA PTSD Clinic
    3. Six to twelve months in the Graduate Student Mental Health Clinic
    4. Six months of DBT training and experience under the supervision of Dr. Jessica Meyer
    5. Six months of Interpersonal Therapy training and experience
    6. Participation at the Western New England Psychoanalytic Institute (25 hours or more)
    7. A scholarly accomplishment focused on psychotherapy (with approval of the track director)
