Palliative Care

UConn Health Palliative Care Services is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with serious or life-limiting illnesses by providing patient—and family-centered medical care and support. Our goals are to decrease discomfort or difficulties caused by illness or medication side effects and to provide compassionate care to patients and their loved ones.

Being There for Patients Who Need Us Most

Palliative care supports patients and families facing the diagnosis of a serious illness. Palliative care can help those who suffer from pain, stress, or other symptoms due to a serious illness such as:

  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • HIV/AIDS
  • ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Dementia

Delivering Palliative Care

Palliative care can be provided in a variety of settings, including the hospital, outpatient clinics, and home care services.

You can request a referral to the palliative care team from your doctor, nurse practitioner, or any member of your treatment team. Consultation evaluations and ongoing care can be provided during a hospitalization or in the outpatient setting in the Palliative Medicine clinic or Supportive Care Clinic within the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Insurance Coverage

Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, offer coverage for palliative care.

Outcome

Cervical cancer is highly treatable if it is caught early. The survival rate exceeds 90% with early detection and intervention. With the absence of early symptoms, routine Pap and/or HPV tests are vital for early diagnosis, treatment, and survival of cervical cancer.
