CALL SCHEDULE BY YEAR
- Residents on call in Psychiatry are in-hospital, and they cover the 18-bed inpatient psychiatric unit, consult liaison service, psychiatric Emergency Department, and phone calls from outpatients. Residents do not round on the inpatient unit (this is done by the attending psychiatrists).
- PGY1: Residents are on call in Psychiatry only while on rotation in psychiatry or neurology. While rotating on medicine, residents take calls as per the medicine service’s schedule.
- First six months: All shifts are supervised by a PGY3 resident on-site. Average of 1-2 short calls (4:30 to 8 p.m.) per week and 1-2 longer weekend calls (12 hours long) per month.
- Second six months: Intern operates independently with the same call schedule as the first six months, but now the supervising PGY3 residents are available via phone for assistance and no longer on-site. Residents also complete one month of night float (8 p.m. to 8 a.m., Sunday p.m. - Friday a.m.) supervised by an in-house PGY2 resident during this time.
- PGY2
- Similar to PGY1 but with the addition of 24-hour shifts covering Friday evening from 4:30 to 8 a.m. after the regular workday.
- One month of independent night float (8 p.m. to 8 a.m., Sunday night to Friday morning) in the first 6 months.
- One month of supervisory night float (8 p.m. to 8 a.m., Sunday night to Friday morning) in the second six months.
- PGY3
- First six months: In-person supervision of PGY1 call (weekday short calls and weekend 12-hour calls).
- Second six months: Available via phone to PGY1s for assistance on-call.
- PGY4
- No call after hours.
- Coverage of PGY1 and PGY2 afternoon didactics on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-2 times per month.
