Pediatric ID Fellowship Rotations

Inpatient Rotations to Connecticut Children’s Inpatient Consultations
Fellows will rotate on the General Pediatric ID Consult Service in one month blocks on average six to nine months in the first year. The patient population includes the entire spectrum of infant, child, adolescent and young adult patients including those in the intensive care unit (neurology, cardiothoracic, surgical, medical), those who are immunocompromised (including HIV-infected patients and those taking immunosuppressive medications) and those with post-surgical complications. Teaching takes place at daily attending rounds. The fellows are expected to attend all the required divisional conferences and clinical microbiology rounds held in the microbiology laboratory. The team typically includes residents and medical students. All care is supervised by the attending physician assigned to the pediatric ID consult service.

Ambulatory Clinic to Connecticut Children’s Outpatient Consultation Clinic
Fellows will attend one clinic session a week. The clinic will allow for follow-up of patients seen on the inpatient consult service, as well as new outpatient consultations and follow-up of patients with chronic diseases, including immunodeficiency and HIV infection. The clinic experience will be supervised by one of the pediatric infectious disease attendings. Experiences in the Immunology clinic will be supervised by one of the clinical immunologists on staff. The patient population includes the entire spectrum of infant, child, adolescent and young adult patients normally seen in the infectious disease clinic. Teaching takes place in the clinic. All care is supervised by the attending physician assigned to that clinic session.

Microbiology Rotation
The fellow will attend a one-week introduction to the microbiology laboratory at the start of year one, learning the basic procedures and laboratory testing that are performed. In addition they will attend plate rounds once a week while on inpatient rotations (and as they can when off service).

Infection Prevention Experiences
The fellow will be involved in infection prevention practices as they pertain to the hospital setting throughout their inpatient clinical experiences. In the second year they will sit on the Infection Prevention Committee and attend monthly meetings.

In the second year they will undertake a two-week block working alongside the Infection Prevention nurses as they perform their normal responsibilities. The fellow will assist with case investigation, data collection, chart review, and providing clinical advice as necessary.

As part of their fellowship they may identify a topic of interest in the area of Infection Prevention to investigate as either a Quality Improvement initiative or as a research question.

Electives
If a fellow becomes aware of an away elective that is relevant to the course work and is interested in taking the elective, they must get the director’s permission at least six months in advance.
