APPLICATION PROCESS

The UConn Gastroenterology-Hepatology Fellowship Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All applications to our program (and supporting documents) must be submitted via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service).

All ERAS applications must include:

  1. Common application form
  2. CV with any gaps in training explained

  3. Official medical school transcript

  4. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) letter (formerly Dean’s letter)

  5. Three recent letters of recommendation, including one from the program director or department chair of your present program

  6. Transcripts of examinations (USMLE Steps 1, 2 & 3; COMLEX Levels 1, 2 & 3)

  7. Personal statement

  8. Photograph

  9. Valid ECFMG certificate (foreign medical school graduates)

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed internal medicine residency education in a three-year ACGME-accredited residency program, an AOA-approved residency program, a program with ACGME International (ACGME-I) Advanced Specialty Accreditation, or a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)-accredited or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)-accredited residency program located in Canada.

In addition, applicants must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible for appointment to the program:

  1. Graduates of United States or Canadian medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
  2. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have a valid ECFMG certificate
  3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have completed a Fifth Pathway Program accredited by the LCME

UConn accepts applicants who are United States citizens, or foreign nationals who have J-1, EAD, or permanent resident status. The UConn School of Medicine/Capital Area Health Consortium does NOT sponsor H1B or O visas.

No resident will be permitted to begin training without legal permission to work in the U.S. UConn is under no obligation to hold any position for any candidate who matched but who does not have legal documentation to work in the United States.

Applicants must provide documentation of successful completion of USMLE Step 3 and verification of successful completion of residency prior to starting the fellowship.

Fellow Selection

Our Fellowship Program Selection Committee determines the rank order list for NRMP. Candidates are selected for the NRMP rank list and order on the basis of their academic credentials, preparedness, ability, aptitude, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity as demonstrated during the interview.

The NRMP match Match Participation Agreement is a binding commitment.
