Dear Prospective Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residents,

We thank you for your interest in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program at UConn Health/Hartford Hospital/Gaylord Specialty Healthcare. This is the first PM&R residency in the Nutmeg State and I am excited to share our program with you.

Our mission is to train the future generation of rehabilitation medical doctors to be the experts in value based evaluation, diagnosis and management of disabling and neuro-musculoskeletal and complex medical conditions, leaders in directing evidence-based, compassionate care to patients through the continuum of care to maximize function and outcomes, to be leaders in directing post-acute care management and rehabilitation and advocates of well-being and prevention of injury and disease.

In order to do this we provide:

  1. A multicenter, collaborative model to provide a balanced curriculum with a wide breadth and depth of clinical exposures in inpatient, outpatient rehabilitation and subspecialties taught by a highly qualified and talented faculty.
  2. A highly structured didactic program, interactive training workshops along with a Board review program to provide in depth medical knowledge and prepare our residents for the Board examination.
  3. A training program focused on clinical and career mentorship, a step-by-step increase in clinical decision making autonomy to prepare our residents to become accomplished clinicians and undisputed leaders in the specialty.
  4. A wide variety of opportunities for scholarly activity in clinical research, teaching, quality improvement, and education in an environment that encourages self-analyses and open inquiry.

The residency program is a collaboration between three sites: UConn Health, Hartford Hospital and Gaylord Hospital. UConn Health is a nationally recognized academic medical center with state-of-the-art neuroscience research facility. Hartford Hospital is a Level I trauma center and is recognized for its quality and reputation for clinical excellence. Gaylord Hospital, one of the nation’s leading rehabilitation-focused healthcare systems, offers a broad continuum of care including comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care, transitional living for brain injury and stroke, the largest adaptive sports program in the region, and the Gaylord Milne Institute for Healthcare Innovation, a hub for accelerating world-class research and innovation.

Our residents will spend majority of the transitional year internship in the internal medicine program at UConn Health. Majority of the inpatient rehabilitation experience will be split between Gaylord Hospital and Hartford Hospital. Majority of the outpatient and subspecialty clinics will be at Hartford Hospital and affiliated centers. Our residents will have structured rotations at Connecticut Children’s, Hospital for Special Care and the VA.

We value diversity in our staff and faculty and model our patient outreach to improve access and to close the gap in health care disparities in our patient population

We are committed to providing a robust, cutting edge comprehensive training program dedicated to training our residents to be not only well rounded rehab medicine physicians, but provide a rich environment to groom them to pursue the career or specialty fellowship of their choice.

We appreciate your interest and look forward to hearing from you!
