Breast Cancer Screening

Overview

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women second only to lung cancer. Tens of thousands of deaths in the United States can be attributed to invasive breast cancer. While the exact cause of cancer is unknown, experts have identified factors that can lead to an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Risk Factors

Breast cancer researchers have identified the following risk factors for developing breast cancer:

  • Advanced age
  • Obesity
  • Personal history of breast cancer
  • Mutations of the BRCA1 or BRCA 2 genes
  • Not having children or having the first child after 30
  • Menopause after 55
  • Starting period before age 12
  • Dense breast tissue
  • Radiation therapy to the chest before age 30
  • Hormone therapy after menopause

Prevention Services

UConn’s Breast Cancer Screening service has a team of specialized medical professionals including genetic counselors who can help you understand and identify your risk factors and take steps to minimize your risk of developing breast cancer.

In addition, the Community Breast Navigation Program team of navigators reaches out to the community with breast cancer screening education to help raise awareness about prevention, early detection, and new advances in care. They also provide scheduling and financial assistance for those in need. They may recommend lifestyle changes, cancer prevention screening, treatment, participation in today’s most promising clinical trials, or risk-reducing surgery.
