Conferences

Below is a list of our conferences at which fellows are expected to attend and participate. We expect attendance at all weekly conferences, radiology meetings, Wednesday education session, and grand rounds meetings unless the fellow is on vacation or unless emergent clinical duties preclude attendance.

Otolaryngology Radiology Conference - Monthly, 1st Thursday, 7-8 a.m., Connecticut Children’s
Members of the above departments (including fellows and residents) attend. This meeting correlates and discusses specific cases with Radiological differential diagnoses focusing on the radiographic presentations and findings of otloaryngologic conditions.

Otolaryngology Morbidity and Mortality Conference - Monthly, 1st Wednesday, 5-6 p.m., Outpatient Pavilion at UConn Health
This conference occurs monthly to review outcomes and key learning's from cases from the previous month.

Pediatrics Grand Rounds - Weekly, Tuesdays, 8-9 a.m., Conklin Building at Hartford Hospital
This conference is attended by the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Medical Staff, House Staff, Advance Practice RNs, Community Pediatricians, Physician Assistants, Fellows and Fellows. Topics change as to inform attendees of new developments in various areas of health care for children.

Weekly Education Conference - Wednesday, 4-5 p.m., Connecticut Children’s
Connecticut Children’s otolaryngology attendings, fellow, residents, and medical students will attend this meeting. The fellow is responsible for leading this conference. A list of topics will be given at the beginning of the year and will follow topics suggested by the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology.

Multidisciplinary Continual Improvement Conference - Quarterly, Thursdays, 7-8 a.m., Connecticut Children’s
All pediatric surgeons and anesthesiologists are invited to participate. Typically, two or three cases are presented by the attending faculty. The focus of the multidisciplinary conference is to examine and improve the system level factors that contribute to patient outcomes.

Chapter Review - Monthly, 3rd Wednesday, 3-4 p.m., Connecticut Children’s
Fellow and pediatric otolaryngology attendings will review anatomy and basic science of selected, foundational topics in pediatric otolaryngology.

Cochlear Implant Team Meeting- Monthly, 1st Wednesday, 1-2 pm, Audiology conference room
Cochlear implant surgeons and audiologist will meet to review upcoming cases and to discuss candidacy evaluation for cochlear implant. This conference also serves as a forum to discuss trends and advances in cochlear implants and patient selection.

Airway Conference - Monthly, 2nd Thursday, 7-8 a.m., Connecticut Children’s
Anesthesiologists and Otolaryngologists are invited to participate in this conference which discusses and reviews the difficulty airway cases of the past month. Focus is on developing shared management plans and improving communication between providers who manage children with complex airway problems.

Journal Club - Monthly, 4th Wednesday, 4-5 p.m., location varies
Fellow and residents will meet to discuss pertinent and relevant topics in the pediatric otolaryngology literature. Participants will be evaluated on their ability to read and interpret said literature.

Vestibular Team Meeting - Bi-Monthly, 3rd Thursday, 12-1 p.m., Audiology Vestibular Lab
This multidisciplinary team of otolaryngologists, audiologists and physical therapists will meet to review patients recently diagnosed with vestibular abnormalities with special attention to diagnosis, testing results and outcomes of therapies.

Otolaryngology Simulation - Quarterly, Thursday, 4-6 p.m., Hartford Hospital SIM Center

Presentations

Didactic Presentations - 3 total in the year
On at least three occasions during the training year, the fellow will be required to make a presentation at Grand Rounds or other local venue. The topics should be presented and approved by Dr. Christopher Grindle.
