Thank you for your interest in infectious diseases, an incredibly rich, diverse, and rewarding specialty. As is evidenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the bounds of our specialty know no limits, spanning pathogenesis, clinical care, disaster planning, infection control and prevention, immunology and vaccine development, public health, social determinants of health, diagnostic testing, and communication skills. The IDSA, the ID Training Program Directors’ Committee, and all ID program directors recognize that the last few fellowship application seasons have fallen during complex times. As such, in accordance with recommendations from the AAMC and the University of Connecticut Graduate Medical Education Committee, we will be conducting fellowship interviews entirely virtually for the foreseeable future. While we recognize the potential benefits of in person interviews, we agree that continued virtual recruitment represents the most equitable and environmentally conscious approach, with clear cost and time savings for both applicants and programs.
We strongly encourage anyone who is considering applying for ID fellowship training to apply, we welcome your interest in infectious diseases and our program, and look forward to “meeting” many of you on the interview trail this year, albeit virtually.
We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). We only accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
The elements of the application that we require through ERAS are:
- Common Application Form
- CV with any gaps in training explained
- Medical School Transcript
- Dean’s Letter
- Three Letters of Reference including one from the program director or department chair of your present program
- USMLE Transcript
- Personal Statement
- Photo
Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible fellowship training:
a. Graduate of U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
b. Graduate of a foreign medical school with:
- A valid ECFMG certificate or
- A full and unrestricted license to practice medicine
Applicants must have successfully completed a three-year internal medicine residency prior to the anticipated start date of the Infectious Diseases fellowship program.
Our program does not have a cut off year since graduation from medical school. Applicants must have passed USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3.
We consider the interview an important part of the application process. All interviews will be held using a virtual platform. Selected applicants are invited for interviews during the months of September through November, with details regarding the virtual interview process provided at that time. In addition, applicants will be offered the opportunity to virtually attend one of our weekly Fellow conferences and Intercity Grand Rounds. Since formal in person tours of the facilities are not feasible, we have posted several informational videos and testimonials on the website for your review.
UConn accepts applicants who are United States citizens, or foreign nationals who have J-1, EAD, or permanent resident status. The UConn School of Medicine/Capital Area Health Consortium does NOT sponsor H1B or O visas.
Fellows are selected from eligible applicants on the basis of their academic credentials, preparedness, ability, aptitude, communication skills, personal qualities such as motivation and integrity, and other factors.
The Fellowship Selection Committee determines the rank list and order for NRMP. Candidates will be selected for the NRMP rank list and order on the basis of credentials as detailed above after careful review of application materials and as demonstrated during the interview. The NRMP match is binding.
No resident will be permitted to begin training without legal permission to work in the U.S. UConn is under no obligation to hold any position for any candidate who matched but who does not have legal documentation to work in the United States.
