Resident Well-Being

Promoting a Healthy and Happy Living Environment

When it comes to creating a thriving community, the well-being of residents is always a top priority at UConn’s Neurosurgery Residency Program. We aim to providing a safe and nurturing environment that goes beyond just meeting basic needs. We understand the importance of resident well-being and strive to create spaces where individuals can truly thrive by fostering an atmosphere which promotes physical, mental, and emotional health.

Our commitment to this includes actively participating in programs and initiatives supporting the well-being of our residents. Physical well-being is crucial for leading a healthy lifestyle and we prioritize factors such as access to various walking paths within our campus community. By encouraging regular exercise and outdoor activities, aiming to promote an active lifestyle that contributes to overall wellness. Through the office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) residents are offered biannual assessments to assess burnout and have access to use it as a tool to self-administer burnout if needed more often throughout the year.

Mental health is equally important in maintaining resident well-being. We recognize the impact of stressors in everyday life and work towards providing resources that help residents manage their mental health effectively. Not only does the GME Office offer free counseling services through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), but residents also have access to free psychiatric care through The Capital Area Health Consortium (CAHC).

Building relationships not only enhances emotional wellbeing and happiness but also provides a support system during challenging times. At the Neurosurgery Residency Program, we believe in proactive measures when it comes to resident well-being. The Neurosurgery Residency Program Director has a weekly one on one meeting with each of the residents, with a major focus on the well-being of the resident. The resident has full access to the program director at any time for any issues that may arise. Through continuous feedback collection and open communication, we address concerns promptly while constantly improving our services based on the evolving needs of our residents and create the sense of belonging which is essential for promoting emotional well-being within program.

By prioritizing resident well-being at every level, the Neurosurgery Residency Program at UConn Heath, has been unparalleled in the commitment towards resident well-being in a thriving community.

UConn School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education is committed to supporting the well-being of all our residents and fellows during their training program.
