Clinical Training Sites

UConn Health – John Dempsey Hospital

  • 234-bed academic medical center located in Farmington, CT.
  • Handles over 8,500 annual admissions and 10,000 surgeries.
  • UConn ICU (28 beds):
    • Mixed Medical–Surgical–Neurocritical Care Unit operating under a closed ICU model.
    • Managed by intensivists from Anesthesiology, Surgery, Neurology, and Internal Medicine.
    • Anesthesia fellows train alongside Pulmonary Critical Care fellows, fostering collaboration and shared learning across disciplines.
    • Anesthesiology and Internal Medicine residents, as well as medical students, rotate through this unit, where fellows actively participate in teaching and supervision.
    • Emphasis on team-based care, education, and multidisciplinary learning.
    • The ICU team also oversees Rapid Response Team (RRT) activations for deteriorating inpatients.

Hartford Hospital

  • Established in 1854; an 867-bed tertiary referral center and one of New England’s largest teaching hospitals.
  • Receives 9,000+ patient transfers annually from over 50 regional facilities.
  • Among the busiest surgical and transplant centers in the region.
  • Total of 105 ICU beds and 58 stepdown beds.

Trauma / Surgical ICU (C8I):

  • 14-bed unit managing trauma and complex surgical patients (general, thoracic, vascular, transplant, and obstetric/gynecologic).
  • Fellows participate in multidisciplinary rounds, procedures, and 24-hour in-house calls, emphasizing comprehensive surgical critical care.
  • Anesthesiology and Surgery residents, as well as medical students, rotate through this unit, where fellows take an active role in teaching.
  • Anesthesia fellows train alongside Surgical Critical Care (SICU) fellows, promoting collaboration and integrated learning.
  • The ICU team also leads RRT activations for deteriorating surgical inpatients.

Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU (B2N & B3N):

  • 18-bed combined unit for postoperative cardiac and thoracic surgery patients, including heart transplants and mechanical circulatory support (IABP, Impella, ProtekDuo, VAD, ECMO).
  • Fellows gain advanced experience in hemodynamic monitoring, procedural skills, ECMO management, and perioperative cardiac critical care.
  • The ICU team also responds to RRT activations for cardiothoracic surgical patients.

Coronary Care Unit (CCU – B10I):

  • 12-bed unit managing patients with acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, and malignant arrhythmias.
  • Fellows develop skills in cardiac hemodynamics, mechanical support, and ECMO.
  • Anesthesia fellows train alongside Cardiology fellows, encouraging cross-disciplinary education.
  • Internal Medicine residents and medical students rotate through this unit under fellows’ supervision.

Neuro ICU (C9I & B9I):

  • 23-bed combined Neurocritical Care Unit caring for patients with stroke, TBI, spinal cord injury, status epilepticus, and post-neurosurgical conditions.
  • Fellows develop expertise in neurocritical physiology, intracranial pressure management, and neurologic prognostication.

Medical ICU (B11I, B7I, B9I):

  • 38-bed combined Medical Units caring for patients with various pulmonary and medical pathologies.
  • Fellows rotate through this unit for electives only.

Emergency Critical Care Unit (ECCU):

  • Located within the Emergency Department with over 100,000 annual visits.
  • Provides exposure to advanced resuscitation and management of undifferentiated critical illness alongside emergency intensivists.

The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC)

  • 414-bed teaching hospital and Level III trauma center located in New Britain, CT.
  • HOCC ICU (24 beds):
    • Mixed medical–surgical–neurocritical care unit staffed by dedicated intensivists and APPs.
    • Fellows manage a broad range of postoperative and trauma patients and perform procedures in a high-acuity environment.
    • Offers valuable exposure to community-based critical care and independent clinical decision-making.
    • The ICU team also coordinates RRT activations for deteriorating inpatients.
