Fellows are expected to participate in at least one research project and/or one quality improvement project during their fellowship. The program fosters a strong culture of academic inquiry and innovation, preparing fellows to become clinician–scientists, educators, and leaders in evidence-based critical care.
Monthly Research Forums provide a collaborative environment where fellows:
- Present and discuss ongoing projects and new research ideas.
- Receive structured didactics on research methodology, biostatistics, abstract and manuscript preparation.
- Obtain constructive feedback from faculty mentors and peers across multiple disciplines.
The research enterprise is supported by:
- A dedicated data management team and electronic research database that tracks key severity-of-illness indicators.
- Statistical support through the Clinical Research Center.
- Internal funding opportunities for start-up projects within the Departments of Anesthesiology, Surgery, and Emergency Medicine.
Scholarly Expectations
Beyond research participation, fellows are expected to contribute to the academic mission of the program through diverse scholarly activities that promote professional growth and academic excellence.
Examples include:
- Presenting abstracts, case reports, or QI initiatives at regional or national conferences.
- Publishing manuscripts or contributing book chapters in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, or critical care.
- Developing simulation-based curricula, educational modules, or institutional clinical protocols.
- Collaborating across disciplines—including Anesthesiology, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, and Neurology—on research, education, and quality improvement initiatives.
Through these experiences, fellows cultivate the academic and leadership skills essential for advancing both their careers and the science and practice of critical care medicine.
