The Graduate Medical Education office is part of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and is responsible for the quality of all sponsored residency and fellowship programs.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications in addition to program specific qualifications to be eligible for appointment to residency/fellowship programs at The University of Connecticut School of Medicine:
- Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and successful completion of any pre-requisite training specified by the appropriate accrediting body*.
- Graduates of osteopathic medicine schools in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and successful completion of any pre-requisite training specified by the appropriate accrediting body*.
- Graduates of dental medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
- Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have or will have a valid Educational Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate and successful completion of any pre-requisite training specified by the appropriate accrediting body*.
- Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program and successful completion of any pre-requisite training specified by the appropriate accrediting body*. A Fifth Pathway program is an academic year of supervised clinical education provided by an LCME-accredited medical school to students who meet the following conditions:
- have completed, in an accredited college or university in the United States, undergraduate premedical education of the quality acceptable for matriculation in an accredited United States medical school.
- have studied at a medical school outside the United States and Canada but listed in the World Health Organization Directory of Medical Schools.
- have completed all of the formal requirements of the foreign medical school except internship and/or social service.
- have attained a score satisfactory to the sponsoring medical school on a screening examination.
- have passed either the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in the Medical Sciences, Parts I and II of the examination of the National Board of Medical Examiners, or Steps 1 and 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
- Fifth Pathway graduates are not required to have an ECFMG certificate.
- The last class eligible for Fifth Pathway certification was December 2009.
*Accrediting bodies such as Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). For unaccredited programs the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) sets pre-requisite training requirements.
Selection
Programs select a resident/fellow from eligible applicants on the basis of resident/fellow program-related criteria such as preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, personal qualities such as motivation and integrity, and other factors.
