Jo-anne Cosgriff, MD
Medical Director, Intensive Care Unit Chair of Medicine Waterbury Hospital
Dr. Jo-anne (Joey) Cosgriff graduated from UCONN Medical School in 1999. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial and stayed on to be a Chief Resident. Joey then went on to Yale University where she did a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship and a Masters in Public Health. She joined the faculty of the Medical Residency Program at Waterbury in 2006. While at Waterbury Hospital, she has become the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit in 2009, the Interim Chair of Medicine in 2023 and has been named permanent Chair of Medicine in 2025. She attends regularly in the Waterbury ICU where she enjoys working closely with the residents. She also has an outpatient pulmonary practice in Middlebury. In her free time, Joey enjoys spending time with her husband and two children.

Danise Schiliro, MD, FACP
Program Director, Internal Medicine
Dr. Danise Schiliro graduated from New York University School of Medicine and completed her residency and chief residency training at the New York University Internal Medicine Residency Program. She served as an Associate Program Director for the internal medicine residency program at New York University prior to joining the teaching faculty at Waterbury Hospital in 2014. In 2015 she was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Schiliro served as an Associate Residency Program Director at Waterbury Hospital until June of 2025 when she became Program Director. In addition to working and learning with internal medicine residents, she enjoys her role as site director for medical students who rotate at Waterbury Hospital, and she received the award for Excellence in Teaching from Quinnipiac University School of Medicine in 2025. Academic interests include substance use disorders, patient care handover, and transition of care from the inpatient to outpatient settings. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her beloved family, travel, and rooting for the New York Yankees.

Pia Dogbey, MBChB FACP
Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine
Dr. Pia Dogbey received her medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and completed Internal Medicine residency training at the Hospital of St. Raphael (Now Yale New Haven Medical Center). She served as Chief Resident, then Clinician Educator at the Saint Raphael’s campus of Yale New Haven Hospital until 2013.
Dr. Dogbey’s career in hospital and medical education administration began at Griffin Hospital where she was the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Program, working closely with hospital administration to achieve quality metrics and safe patient care goals. With this experience she assumed her next role as Firm Chief for the Yale Waterbury Internal Medicine Program (2016-2025) and is now the Associate Program Director for Inpatient Medicine since June 2025.
Dr. Dogbey’s professional interests include teaching clinical reasoning and preparing trainees for professional life after training. She enjoys coaching students and young professionals interested in clinical and academic medicine, and has served in mentoring roles on local and international platforms. Her dedication to multidisciplinary patient care and teaching has earned her awards for the collaborative care of patients and inpatient teaching.
In her private life Dr. Dogbey enjoys home decoration, travelling, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Katelyn Norman, MD HEC-C
Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine
Dr. Katelyn Norman received her bachelor's degree in fine art from New York University where she studied studio art, specifically concentrating in painting. Afterward, she attended medical school as a member of the inaugural class of the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, where she graduated with High Distinction in the Medical Humanities.
She completed residency training at the Yale-Waterbury Internal Medicine Residency Program where she subsequently served as chief resident, core faculty, and now as an Associate Program Director, where she directs the new Medical Humanities curriculum. Her professional interests include clinical ethics, and she co-chairs the Waterbury Hospital Ethics Committee, as well as Medical Illustration and Fine Art.

Kanwardeep Arora, MBBS, MD, FACP
Inpatient Firm Chief, Internal Medicine Residency Program
Dr. Kanwar Arora received his Medical School Degree from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, India. He pursued his residency training at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai/Queens Hospital in New York. He after graduation has served at various roles in academic medicine with most recent being Associate Program Director at Griffin Hospital, CT where he was actively involved in curriculum development, OSCE development, and coached the Doctor Dilemma team to finals at ACP CT chapter, prior to returning to Waterbury Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2021. He is currently working as Firm Chief and is actively involved in inpatient teaching of residents at the program. He is currently Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Frank H. Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. He is also the current chair of IMG council for Connecticut Chapter.
Dr. Arora enjoys his time teaching house staff to prepare for board exams and encourages them to participate in research projects. He enjoys spending time with his family and in his free time likes to hike, play tennis and do photography. He served for 4 years on National Doctors Dilemma Committee as a contributor and reviewer.

Atsuko Yamahiro, MD
Clinic Director
Dr. Atsuko Yamahiro received her Medical and Master in Public Health degrees from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. Her postgraduate training includes residency and chief residency at the Yale Internal Medicine/Primary Care program in the HIV Training Track.
She worked as an Associate Program Director for Ambulatory Education at the Internal Medicine Residency Program at MetroHealth System in Cleveland, OH prior to returning to Connecticut.
She joined the Waterbury Internal Medicine Residency Program faculty in 2019. She works as the clinic director and as a primary care physician at Chase Clinic, where she cares for patients living with HIV and supervises residents.

Michael Granieri, DO
Core Internal Medicine Faculty
Dr. Michael Granieri received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Lafayette College, and completed his medical degree at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed his internship and residency at Summa Health Akron City Hospital in Akron Ohio. Dr. Granieri joined as core internal medicine faculty at Waterbury Hospital in 2025, and maintains a strong interest in academia. During his residency, he was the recipient of several teaching awards including the medical student teacher of the year, as well as senior resident educator of the year. Dr. Granieri also serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Frank Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, and is passionate for both medical student and resident education. His primary academic interest includes internal medicine board preparation for the ABIM, USMLE, and COMLEX exams. Dr. Granieri continues to serve as a mentor for both medical students and residents. In his free time, Dr. Granieri is an avid weightlifter and running enthusiast.

Suleyman Felek, MD
Core Internal Medicine Faculty
Dr. Suleyman Felek graduated from Gazi University Medical School and completed his residency in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology at Firat University in Turkey. He subsequently joined the core faculty at the Firat University Medical School. From 2001 to 2012, he worked on infectious disease research at the Ohio State University and University of Michigan. From 2012 to 2013 he researched stem cell and regenerative medicine at Bell Biosystems. His internship was at Richmond University Medical Center and residency was at Yale-Waterbury Internal Medicine Residency Program. His academic interests include infectious diseases and pathogenesis of infectious diseases. He published two books and several peer-reviewed journal articles. Two of his publications were the cover paper in Infection and Immunity and Microbiology journals.

Shiven Chabria, MBBS
Core Internal Medicine Faculty
Dr. Chabria is a triple board-certified physician with expertise in internal medicine, infectious diseases, HIV medicine and drug development. His career highlights include core faculty positions at Yale and Yale -affiliated programs, bench and translational research in the field of HIV drug resistance and phase I, II and III clinical trials for the treatment of individuals with Multi-drug-resistant HIV. He is the author of multiple publications in high-impact journals and the recipient of multiple awards including "teacher of the year" and patient's choice awards.
Dr. Chabria's teaching interests span medical education, the art, science and history of medicine, patient-centric care and graduate medical education. His non-clinical pursuits include philology, epistemology, applied music theory, coffee brewing and aroma chemistry.

Yuliya Riat, MD

Dr. Yuliya Riat joined Waterbury Hospital/Chase Clinic in October 2015. She is originally from Kazakhstan, where she received her Medical Doctorate Degree from the prestigious Karagandi State Medical University. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and graduated from the Geriatrics Fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Riat is practicing Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine, and the areas of her expertise range from care for the independently living residents, to the assisted living, and to the dementia units in the long-term care facilities. Dr. Riat is focusing her interest on primary care for the elderly, geriatric assessments, assessment of memory loss and dementia, fall prevention, polypharmacy, and elderly drivers’ safety. She provides comprehensive Geriatric consultive service in Waterbury Hospital and is involved in care for the elderly on the medical/surgical, orthopedic, ICU, trauma, and hospice units. Dr. Riat has received several awards for medical excellence as well as multiple teaching awards throughout her career.
