Welcome to the Complex Family Planning (CFP) Fellowship at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. We thank you for your interest in our program. On this website, you will find information about our Complex Family Planning Fellowship Program and information about the Greater Hartford area.
As you read about our fellowship program, you will see that our fellows receive training in all aspects of complex family planning at UConn John Dempsey Hospital and Hartford Hospital. Faculty members at these affiliate sites are actively involved with fellowship training.
Any candidate considering fellowship training in any of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine programs must have passed Steps 1, 2, and 3 of the USMLE. In addition, please be aware that the University of Connecticut School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education programs do not sponsor “H” or “O” visas. Permanent Resident status (“green card”), J-1 visas sponsored by ECFMG, and Employment Authorization Documents are accepted.

Mission
The mission of the Complex Family Planning fellowship at University of Connecticut is to provide high quality, reproductive-justice centered training in complex family planning to obstetrician-gynecologists to build future leaders in the field. Fellows will gain experience in the care of routine and complex patients as well as the necessary skills to provide expert consultation and education of other learners in this field. The program focuses on providing quality care to patients regardless of background, with a significant focus on promoting health equity. In addition to clinical training, we provide strong research and advocacy training to encourage our fellows to impact the field of family planning and promote excellent care for all patients.
Program Aims
We aim to provide a well-rounded training experience in all aspects of complex family planning to develop future leaders in the field. The fellows’ experience is rooted in health equity and reproductive justice as crucial components to effective complex family planning care. The fellows' experience is collaborative and coordinated between the 2 sites, UConn Health and Hartford Hospital. Specifically, we aim to provide directed experiences and training in the following domains:
- Clinical training: provide a robust clinical experience in various settings, including complex abortion, abnormal pregnancy care and contraception provision, that is rooted in reproductive justice principles and addresses social determinants of health.
- Professional Development: evidence-based education on complex family planning to develop the knowledge to provide expert consultation and care for patients in the field of family planning. In addition, fellows receive education on research methodology, advocacy, and provision of medical education .
- Research: mentorship to produce interdisciplinary and policy-responsive research by completion of a thesis. Fellows are also supported to complete additional research interests as they choose, including mentorship of residents and/or medical students on scholarly activities with guidance from faculty to further develop their research skills.
- Advocacy: engage in public health advocacy on local, state, and regional levels with community partners and legislators, and engage in anti-bias and anti-racism initiatives.
