Program Description

The program will help fellows achieve the following:

• Develop a knowledge base and skills set to be experts in all phases of the disaster cycle
• Participation in local, regional, federal, and international IDEM activities
• Develop a comprehensive knowledge base of United States’ Preparedness and Response System
• Develop skills to take leadership roles in their community
• Develop a competency in IDEM research and teaching skills

Public Health Training

The core of the didactic curriculum involved obtaining an M.P.H. from the University of Connecticut.

Disaster Field Work

Practical experience is a key component of the fellowship. Fellows will spend time each year both in disaster and other austere settings as determined by events and their schedule. Field work will be arranged and coordinated under the supervision of the fellowship director.

Clinical Emergency Medicine

Fellows work 800 clinical hours per year as faculty in UConn John Dempsey Hospital. The fellow will participate in other academic activities in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Prerequisites

• Board certified in emergency medicine
• Ability to obtain medical license in Connecticut, USA
• Ability to obtain a clinical appointment at University of Connecticut School of Medicine
