In November 2017, William Shaw, Ph.D., joined the Division of Occupational & Environmental Medicine as its new Director. Dr. Shaw has research interests in Workers’ Compensation health care, return-to-work coordination, pain management, patient-provider communication, work-related musculoskeletal disorders, and employer disability management practices. Dr. Shaw comes to us from the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety (Hopkinton, Massachusetts), where he was a Principal Research Scientist in the Center for Disability Research for 17 years. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from a doctoral program hosted jointly by San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego. After his PhD, he returned to the east coast for a post-doctoral fellowship in injury rehabilitation at the Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Shaw’s training background is in engineering and psychology, and his recent research has focused on supervisor training, psychosocial screening, job modification, and managing chronic health conditions at work. He serves on a number of journal editorial boards, scientific committees, and advisory boards, including the Occupational Health Study Section for the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH).
