Clinical training is divided into dedicated outpatient and inpatient rotations. Inpatient daytime coverage is shared with our advanced practice provider team, which allows our fellows to have dedicated outpatient clinical rotations (protected from inpatient responsibilities).

The first year of fellowship is primarily clinical, equally divided between inpatient and outpatient blocks.

One of the highlights of our fellowship program is not only the fact that fellows have dedicated outpatient rotations, but also that all fellows have their own weekly endocrine and diabetes continuity clinics, which are precepted by core faculty. Our division is located 15 minutes from the main hospital in a large stand-alone ambulatory center in Farmington, CT.

Outpatient rotations will be spent seeing patients with our endocrine faculty, including general endocrinology and diabetes clinics. Fellows participate in all subspecialty and multidisciplinary clinic offerings, which include the Center for Rare Bone Disorders, Turner Syndrome, Gender, REACH for the STARS Cancer Survivorship Program, Lipid Disorders, Weight Management, and Bariatric Programs.

Inpatient responsibilities take place at Connecticut Children's Hospital, where fellows cover the inpatient and consult services. The main hospital is located in Hartford, CT. Our consults occur primarily at the main hospital in Hartford or else at one of our two NICU locations, which are in close proximity to the main hospital.

Depending on the rotation block, fellows will either be at the main hospital taking care of inpatient responsibilities or will be primarily at our outpatient facility. Regardless of the rotation, all fellows are protected on Thursdays to attend the divisional academic conferences, as well as their continuity clinics

The second year of fellowship is more heavily focused on research, with approximately 2 to 3 months of inpatient and outpatient clinical time.

Third year fellows, in combination with their scholarship oversight committee (SOC) and clinical competency committee (CCC), can opt to pursue a clinical track (with at least 6 months of the year dedicated to clinical rotations) or a research track (with 3 months of the year clinical), depending on the status of their research and guided by their career goals. Research/scholarly requirements, as well as clinical evaluations and competency, will also be taken into account.

Overnight and weekend call is divided among the fellows with each fellow responsible for 1/3 of weekend and night calls per year; fellows are always supported on call by a supervising attending.
