The brain is the most complex organ in your body. It acts as our centralized control system and is sometimes described as a “biological computer” because it acquires information, stores it, and processes it.
Injuries to the brain can have great consequences depending on the location and severity of the injury. Memory, muscle control, behavior, emotion, and even basic bodily functions like swallowing and coughing can be altered by brain injury.
UConn Health is home to the UConn NeuroSport program which combines the medical disciplines of sports neurology and orthopedics. We specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of neurologic injuries related to sports. We also concentrate on return-to-play decisions related to these injuries. These include concussions and other forms of traumatic brain injury, spinal injuries, and damage to peripheral nerves. We also provide counseling for athletes who suffer from chronic neurologic conditions including stroke, migraine, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy.
