The Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Program at UConn is a two-year traditional training program for residents who have completed ACGME-accredited general surgery programs. The program is designed to train future thoracic, cardiac, combined cardiothoracic surgeons; or those who choose to pursue additional training in congenital cardiac surgery. The core curriculum allows for flexibility based on the interests of the trainee, with between 9-15 months of thoracic surgery and 9-15 months of cardiac surgery. There is a significant focus on minimally invasive approaches to thoracic and cardiac surgery, with exposure to surgery-adjacent specialties, such as interventional pulmonology and cardiology. Fellows will have significant exposure to EBUS, navigational bronchoscopy, endoscopic airway management, TAVR, and other catheter-based interventions. The core educational curriculum includes weekly didactic sessions for cardiac and thoracic surgery following the thoracic surgery curriculum, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, disease-specific multidisciplinary conferences, and simulation exercises.
