Pediatric Endocrinology – Diabetes Support Group

Type 1

We currently provide comprehensive diabetes team care to >850 patients with T1DM with the goal of achieving the best possible outcomes for all our patients. We encourage all children and families to take advantage of the newest technologies available for the management of type 1 diabetes, including the use of state-of-the-art subcutaneous insulin delivery systems and continuous glucose sensing devices. The proportion of our type 1 patients who are using more intensive insulin regimens has increased over the past year from 77% (382 on insulin pumps/250 on multiple daily insulin injections-[MDI]) to 85% (422 on pumps/316 on MDI). We continue to track key quality indicators and use this data to focus our QI efforts. Our quality outcomes steadily meet or exceed available national benchmarks. Our center is pioneered in successfully managing newly diagnosed children at the outpatient setting if their medical condition meets certain criteria, they are older than three years, and their family is ready to immediately take on the challenge of diabetes care with support from the Connecticut Children's Diabetes Program.

Our multidisciplinary diabetes team members successfully collaborated to:

  1. Update the educational curriculums for type 1 to meet the current national standards for diabetes education.
  2. Form a T1DM Family Advisory Board (FAB)
  3. Submit application to become an AADE Diabetes Accreditation Program for both T1 and T2DM
  4. Implement improved DKA protocol on in-patient unit and PICU and linked to two quality indicators

Our goals are:

  1. Spearhead development of Yahoo Support Group for our patients/families with T1DM
  2. Hold 1st Annual Diabetes Day for Connecticut School Nurses and pediatric primary care providers
  3. Implement type 1 diabetes-specific Transition Curriculum to support development of competencies for adult self-care
  4. Develop a platform to enable electronic reporting of glucose profiles to staff directly from patient pumps/meters
