Selectives

Dermatology/Ophthalmology

The Dermatology/Ophthalmology selective is designed to give the resident exposure to common, non-internal medicine ambulatory problems. Residents will spend time in the ambulatory offices of the University of Connecticut Health Center’s departments of Dermatology and Ophthalmology. In Dermatology, residents are exposed to specialized services including: Mohs Surgery, pigmented nevi, melanoma, hair loss, and podiatry, as well as general dermatology. In Ophthalmology, the resident is expected to become proficient in basic eye exam technique and diagnosis and treatment of common eye abnormalities.

Neurology

The neurology elective is done at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and is a mixture of office-based and inpatient consultative experiences. The rotation is designed to provide the resident with an opportunity to develop skills in performing a competent neurologic assessment, exposure to a broad range of neurologic diseases particularly in the co-morbid medical patient, and development of an understanding of the indications for neurologic consultation in the complex medical patient.

Musculoskeletal Medicine

The Musculoskeletal Block (MSB) rotation is an ambulatory rotation that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of common musculoskeletal disorders. Residents rotate through Rheumatology clinics at the University of Connecticut Health Center as well as the Newington Veterans Administration Hospital. Additionally time is spent at the University of Connecticut Health Center’s Occupational Medicine/Employee Health Service. Techniques of joint aspiration and soft tissue injection are learned over the course of the rotation. Additionally, residents on this rotation gain an appreciation and knowledge for the scope, impact, and management of work related illness.
