Research

The faculty of the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care are involved in research and scholarship in 5 broad public health areas: Epidemiology, International Public Health, Public Policy, Addictions/Addiction Interventions (including alcohol use on campus), and Health Psychology. Across these 5 public health areas departmental faculty and students investigate cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic pain, addictions and sexual health.

The Department’s research is funded by federal, state, local and private sources including the National Institutes of Health (NIDA, NIAAA, NIMH, NIEHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the State of Connecticut Departments of Children and Families (DCF), Public Health (DPH) and Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), Arthritis Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Macy Foundation. The List of Current Grants and Contracts, All Years of Support and the List of Recent Representative Publications reveal the breadth and depth of intra-departmental collaborations and the Department’s work with universities nationally and internationally. During the 2012-2013 period, the Department’s faculty have published more 49 articles in peer reviewed journals, along with letters and editorials that have appeared in high impact journals such as Nature, Science, JAMA, Lancet and the American Journal of Public Health.

The Department manages the editorial offices of two peer-reviewed journals (Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs and Journal of Personality). It also provides considerable amounts of consultation to national and international health agencies through contractual work with the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization.
