Cauda Equina Syndrome
When diagnosed with cauda equina syndrome, it means something is compressing the spinal nerve roots at the lower end of your spinal cord. While rare, cauda equina syndrome is usually considered a surgical emergency. Fast treatment is needed to prevent lasting damage and possibly paralysis of the legs.
Symptoms
If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor right away:
- Severe low back pain
- Pain, numbness or weakness in one or both legs that causes you to trip or have trouble getting up from a chair
- Loss of or different sensations in your legs, buttocks or feet that is severe or gets worse
- Problems with bladder or bowel function
- Sudden sexual dysfunction
Treatment
Surgery within 48 hours is necessary to relieve pressure on nerves and prevent permanent damage. You may also need high doses of corticosteroids to reduce swelling. If you have an infection, you may need antibiotics. If the cause of your CES is a tumor, you may need radiation or chemotherapy.
