Spine
Cervical Disc Herniation
If the discs that cushion your spine become damaged, they may bulge abnormally or rupture in what is called a herniated or slipped disc. Herniated discs can occur in any part of the spine, but they are most common in the neck (cervical) and lower back (lumbar) spine.
Symptoms
You may experience pain, numbness or weakness in the neck, shoulders, chest, arms and hands.
Treatment
In most cases, treatment includes rest or limited activities and pain/inflammation relievers and exercises. You may need to see a physical therapist so you can learn to exercise and protect your neck or for other treatment such as traction. If symptoms persist, your doctor may try corticosteroids. Surgery may be considered if you are having weakness, constant pain or decreased control of your bladder or bowels.
