Adaptation and Resilience in Childhood Study (ARCS)

Approximately 250 mothers (18 years and older) and their 4- to 7-year-old children participated in the ARCS study to help us learn about how young children cope with difficult or stressful experiences.  In September 2024, we reached our target number of enrolled participants for Phase 1 of the study, and we are now conducting follow-up visits with those same participants.

Visits in our kid-friendly lab included parent-child activities and computer tasks guided by our trained research assistants. We are now scheduling mothers who enrolled in Phase 1 to complete their follow-up visits approximately one year after their initial visit. Our hope is to pinpoint social and biological factors that shape children’s development and behavior, using this information to grow systems that will support children and promote their well-being.

What Do ARCS Lab Visits Involve?

  • A 30-to-45-minute online survey to answer questions about your child and your family.
  • A 2 ½ hour visit in our kid-friendly lab (directions).
  • The visit includes parent-child activities, games, and computer tasks.
  • Parents are administered interviews about their experiences and their child.
  • Approved safety practices will be in place (e.g., masks, gloves, sanitization, etc.).
