Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) and Spectrum Disorders
NMO is a rare and very disabling disease if left undiagnosed and untreated. NMO can present in several forms but severe optic neuritis and severe transverse myelitis are frequent presentations. This disease carries a high risk of disability, requiring rapid identification and treatment, which may include admission to UConn John Dempsey Hospital for plasma exchange and infusion of drugs that have been found to improve the risk of accumulating additional lesions. We collaborate with experts in neuro-ophthalmology for evaluation and advanced monitoring of damage in the retina.
