Infectious diseases continue to impose a tremendous health burden to children in the United States and abroad. Attempts to control these diseases have been hampered by an incomplete understanding of their pathogenesis, as well as the associated disease manifestations and transmission mechanisms. A major goal of the pediatric infectious disease program at Connecticut Children’s/UConn Health is, thus, to contribute to improved prevention, treatment and control of locally endemic or epidemic infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS. The thematic areas of research include:

  1. Deer-associated zoonotic infections including Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis.
  2. Periodic fever syndromes.
  3. Vaccine efficacy and outcomes.
  4. Phase I-III antiretroviral clinical trials.
  5. Pathogenesis and epidemiology of sexually transmitted infectious diseases, syphilis in particular.
  6. Antibiotic pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

Dr. Salazar’s research is part of the Spirochete Research Labs at UConn Health.
