Lucas Torres

UConn School of Medicine

Lucas was born and raised in Wethersfield, CT. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in Physiology and Neurobiology and minors in Molecular and Cell Biology and English.

During his undergraduate, Lucas participated in the UConn Health Leaders program at their Asylum Hill Family Medicine, UConn Outpatient Pavilion, and John Dempsey Hospital sites. While with the program Lucas obtained an education on social determinants of health and the underprivileged community. He is currently a coordinator with the program.  Also, during his undergraduate Lucas was a scribe at Saint Francis Hospital Emergency Department. He worked in this position for two years and has interacted with many patients during his time. Lucas was also able to see firsthand the effects SDoH was having on the Hartford community.

I sought to be involved in the UST/AS to learn more about the community around me. I hope to gain a better understanding of the difficulties the community faces concerning their health/social situation. I expect the UST/AS will push my knowledge of social determinants of health and health disparities further. Through previous experience, I understand how important social determinants of health are to an individual’s health, and believe that this program will further this knowledge and allow me to make a change in my field. I know with the UST/AS curriculum and clinical training it will allow me to better serve my future patients in connection with their social needs.
