UConn John Dempsey Hospital has received an 'A' rating by the independent hospital watchdog The Leapfrog Group. The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, the first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety. The Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.
State of Connecticut Department of Public Health/American Heart Association
UConn Health is the first medical center in Connecticut designated as a “HEARTSafe Campus” by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health in collaboration with the American Heart Association (AHA). The three-year designation recognizes UConn Health’s commitment to provide improved cardiac response and care to the staff, students, and visitors of the campus utilizing the “Chain of Survival” of early 911 access, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, and advanced care. Gold Performance Achievement Award
UConn Health is a proud recipient of the ACTION Registry Gold Performance Achievement Award for its commitment to delivering the highest quality of cardiovascular care. The ACTION Registry helps hospitals apply ACC (American College of Cardiology) clinical guideline recommendations in their facilities and achieve quality improvement goals.
Best Maternity Care Hospital
The distinction recognizes facilities that have provided exceptional care to mothers, newborns and their families, as verified by the 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. This includes achieving lower rates of C-sections (NTSV), early elective delivery, and episiotomy, as well as assuring bilirubin screening for all newborns and blood clot prevention techniques for mothers delivering via C-section. UConn John Dempsey Hospital was one of fewer than 225 to receive the prestigious accolade.
Blue Distinction Center+ in Maternity Care

UConn John Dempsey Hospital is now designated a “Blue Distinction Center+” for maternity care.
“Blue Distinction Center+” is a designation from the BlueCross BlueShield Association for demonstrating more affordable care in addition to expertise and a commitment to quality care for vaginal and cesarean section deliveries, and for better overall patient satisfaction and a lower percentage of early elective deliveries.

The UConn Musculoskeletal Institute is now designated a “Blue Distinction Center+” for both knee and hip replacement and spine surgery.
“Blue Distinction” is a designation from the BlueCross BlueShield Association recognizing health care facilities for their expertise in the safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of quality specialty care. UConn Health has been designated as a “Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement” and “Blue Distinction Center+ for Spine Surgery" for meeting nationally established quality care and outcomes criteria, plus meeting cost measures that address the need for affordable health care.
Stroke Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Award

Our commitment to quality stroke care is being recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. We’ve been honored with the Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Award which means we reached an aggressive goal of treating patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care for two consecutive years. The recognition also takes into account the administering of clot-busting treatment for ischemic stroke patients within 60 minutes of arrival at the hospital more than 75 percent of the time, dramatically improving patient outcomes. The Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at UConn Health received the Mission: Lifeline® Gold Plus Receiving Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks.
(STEMI) Heart Attack Receiving Center

UConn John Dempsey Hospital has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® Heart Attack Receiving Center Accreditation. The accreditation program — provided by the American Heart Association — recognizes centers that meet or exceed quality of care measures for people experiencing the most severe type of heart attack, ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), in which blood flow is completely blocked to a portion of the heart. The accreditation identifies health care facilities that meet specific criteria for lifesaving heart attack treatments that restore blood flow.
Regional Excellence for Pulmonary Hypertension Care
Pulmonary Hypertension Association
UConn Health is now designated by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) as a Pulmonary Hypertension Regional Clinical Program. By designating regional centers of excellence across the nation the PHA hopes to improve the overall quality of care and outcomes of pulmonary hypertension patients. UConn Health was identified and approved as a regional program due to its infrastructure and experience to best manage the disease. The accreditation runs until May 2020 when an onsite reaccreditation review by the PHA will occur.

The John Dempsey Hospital at UConn Health earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in hospitals. The accreditation award recognizes UConn Health’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.

NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders)
UConn Health is proud to be a member of NICHE, a nursing education and consultation program dedicated to improving the quality of care for older adults. The NICHE program of NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing was founded in 1992 and includes 566 member organizations. It provides valuable resources for nursing and interdisciplinary teams to achieve organizational goals for geriatric care.

The Stroke Center has been certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission's Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. Vascular Testing and Echocardiography Accredited Facility
Intersocietal Accreditation Commission
The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) has granted UConn Health accreditation in both vascular testing and echocardiography. The IAC has accredited more than 14,000 sites since it began in 1991 and is dedicated to ensuring quality patient care by improving health services through accreditation.
