Education & Community Outreach
Orthopedic Residency
The UConn Health Musculoskeletal Institute offers an accredited five-year residency training program in orthopedic surgery. The goal of our program is for residents to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to provide excellent patient care as practicing orthopedic surgeons in academic or community medicine. The orthopedic residency is one of the strongest in the country because it provides residents with unparalleled clinical experiences in and out of the operating room. Residents work with full-time and voluntary clinical faculty, who are fellowship-trained in all subspecialties, including adult reconstruction, pediatrics, trauma, sports medicine, spine, musculoskeletal oncology, shoulder, elbow, and hand.
Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship aims to attract energetic, inquisitive, talented young surgeons devoted to becoming true experts in the field, including those who excel as superb clinicians, surgeons, and team physicians. The goal is to attract residents who have already set themselves apart from the routine applicant by being incredible doctors in the office and demonstrating a strong grasp of surgical aptitude and excellence. The one-year fellowship is unique because our fellows have four months of dedicated education in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine.
Family Medicine Sports Medicine Fellowship
This program aims to train well-rounded sports medicine physicians poised to become leaders in the field. The focus is to provide fellows with the skills needed to excel as team physicians who provide full-spectrum medical care for athletes and high-level care to active patients of all ages and participation levels. The fellowship seeks to recruit physicians passionate about collegiate athletics and academic involvement.
Inspiring Women in Engineering & Medicine (IWEM)
The IWEM workshop is committed to exposing young women to the rewarding fields of medicine and engineering. In a time where women comprise such a small proportion of the workforce in these fields, IWEM creates an opportunity for women to experience and appreciate what these male-dominated professions entail. The day-long program consists of several hands-on workshops, including suturing and simulated surgery, as well as lectures on the path to becoming a successful female in medicine and engineering. The goal is to inspire hope in these young women by providing an unparalleled experience in these fields. IWEM strives to recruit high school students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds into the program to equip them with the excitement, knowledge, and mentorship necessary to pursue careers in these fields.
