SBIRT for Adults: Training of Trainers

Course Overview: In this 2-day course, participants will a) learn and practice key skills for using validated brief screening tools for adults (specifically, the ASSIST-FC) and determining recommended level of intervention based on level of risk; b) receive an overview of Motivational Interviewing (MI), as used in brief interventions and gain hands-on experience by practicing through role-play and interactive exercises; and c) develop skills to deliver training to others.

Target Audience: SBIRT Trainers

Course Delivery: Delivered at the SBIRT Training Academy or your local agency.

Screening and Brief Intervention (SBI) Training for Clinicians

Course Overview: In this course, participants will learn how to help improve patient outcomes by identifying substance use and determining a patient’s level of risk related to alcohol and other drug use. Participants will also learn how to provide brief interventions about the health impact of substance use, and how to effectively refer a patient to treatment when appropriate.

Target audience: Physicians, PAs, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Psychologists, MFTs, LCSWs, and other behavioral health and specialist clinicians

Course Delivery: 4 hours delivered at the SBIRT Training Academy or your local agency.

Brief Treatment Training

Course Overview: This is an interactive training on an evidence-based Brief Treatment model called, LET’S PLAY. The training includes didactic lecture, group discussion, interactive exercises, video and live demonstrations, role-play activities and opportunities for trying out different strategies. Participants will receive the instruments and protocols that form the core of their work, supported by a wide variety of materials and skills training. As part of this training, therapists will receive instruction in Motivational Interviewing, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and how to integrate therapy components into a coherent sequence to form the brief treatment. Following the training, clinicians can receive individual and group supervision either in person or through teleconference to assist them in applying the LET’S PLAY protocol in their work with clients who are referred to them.

Target Audience: Certified Substance Use Disorder Treatment Counselors, LCSWs, MFTs and other behavioral health specialists and clinicians

Course Delivery: 2-day or 6-hour trainings available.

Addictology

This course focuses on psychoactive substances – their biochemical actions, behavioral and physical health effects, and why people use them. It includes information on harmful interactions of mixing alcohol with medications, and explores the interconnections between substance abuse and mental health.

Target Audience: The target audience for this course is non-specialist physicians and other health care professionals, who need the knowledge to identify and manage problems related to alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.

Course Delivery: Tailored to suit your needs, delivered at the SBIRT Training Academy or your local agency.

Implementation:

This course will consider:

  • Who will perform the screening or be responsible for its completion? (e.g., receptionist, nurse, health educator, physician)
  • How will the screening be performed (e.g., self-administered, paper, electronic)
  • Where will the screening be performed? (e.g., waiting room, exam room)
  • What screening tools will you use? (e.g., AUDIT, ASSIST, etc.)

Target Audience: The target audience for this course is CMOs and Directors, as well as administrators. Other participants involved in planning may also be included.
