Training FAQs

Q. What is Brief Treatment?

A. Brief Treatment (BT) is based upon many years of research on psychotherapy for alcohol and substance abuse, mood disorders, and processes of change. The components of the integrated treatment have all demonstrated benefits for substance abusing or dependent populations in clinical research trials. We have adapted some of the structure and elements of the intervention from a clinical trial funded by CSAT (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment) designed to treat marijuana dependence, The Marijuana Treatment Project. The developers of this treatment model include: Karen Steinberg, Roger Roffman, Kathleen Carroll, Ronald Kadden, Bonnie McRee, Thomas Babor, and Michael Miller. We have also incorporated relevant ideas and information from some of the other sources, including the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). The current model is an attempt to combine the best elements from evidence-based approaches for substance use and mood disorders in a format that is accessible and, hopefully, engaging to both the clients and clinicians delivering the treatment.
