Screening and Brief Intervention for Hazardous and Harmful Substance Use

The ASSIST, developed for the World Health Organization, guides health workers through eight questions covering tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine-type stimulants, inhalants, sedatives, hallucinogens, opioids and 'other drugs'. Based on the patient's responses, the ASSIST generates a substance involvement score that suggests the level of intervention needed. ASSIST screening test is cross-culturally relevant and available in several different languages.

ASSIST Screening Manual

The Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST): Manual for Use in Primary Care is designed to assist health professionals in screening for drug use.

Brief Intervention Manual

The ASSIST-linked Brief Intervention for Hazardous and Harmful Substance Use: Manual for Use in Primary Care is designed to assist health professionals in conducting an ASSIST-linked Brief Intervention for those who screen positive.

Screening and Brief Intervention for Alcohol Problems in Primary Care

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was developed for the World Health Organization to help health care professionals screen patients for excessive drinking and assist in a brief intervention that aims to help risky drinkers reduce or cease alcohol consumption, and thereby avoid the harmful consequences of their drinking. The manual is particularly designed for health care practitioners and a range of health settings, but with suitable instructions it can be self-administered or used by non-health professionals.

AUDIT Manual

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is written to help primary health care workers – physicians, nurses, community health workers, and others – to deal with persons whose alcohol consumption has become hazardous or harmful to their health. The manual explains how to use the screening tool to identify persons with hazardous and harmful patterns of alcohol consumption. The AUDIT is comprised of 10 questions which represent three domains: alcohol consumption (Items 1-3), dependence (Items 4-6) and alcohol-related consequences (Items 7-10). Since its development, the AUDIT has been validated in different settings and has been translated and validated in several different languages. Download the Spanish version.

Screening and Brief Intervention for Hazardous and Harmful Substance Use

Brief Intervention: For Hazardous and Harmful Drinking: A Manual for Use in Primary Care

The companion publication, Brief Intervention: For Hazardous and Harmful Drinking: A Manual for Use in Primary Care describes how to conduct a brief intervention for persons whose alcohol consumption has become hazardous or harmful to their health. Brief interventions are practices aimed at identifying real or potential alcohol-related harm and motivating an individual to do something about it. Together, these manuals describe a comprehensive approach to alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) that is designed to improve the health of the population and patient groups as well as individuals.

Integrated Change Therapy (Brief Treatment)

Integrated Change Therapy for Substance Abuse and Co-Occurring Disorders

This publication, Integrated Change Therapy for Substance Abuse and Co-Occurring Disorders—is a new clinical approach that draws essential elements of brief treatment from multiple sources. Specific innovations in this new practice are influenced by Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) models, integrated with motivational interviewing (MI), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), functional analysis, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
