Education
UConn Health is a teaching hospital that prides itself on providing the best learning experiences we can for students. Our teaching mission incorporates students from UConn School of Medicine, UConn School of Dental Medicine, and affiliations with UConn School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. Recently, the UConn Health Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has been extending its educational opportunities to high school and college students who are still exploring their future careers.
Hands-On Lab Tours for ECE Programs
Lab tours with hands-on experiences are available for Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs affiliated with the University of Connecticut. These tours are designed to introduce students to healthcare career options they may not be familiar with. Students will explore the laboratory and meet staff members to learn about their daily tasks. Each department will have a spokesperson to explain its role and importance. Afterward, students will have the opportunity to perform the tests they have just learned about! We offer practical experiences, including urinalysis testing, dilutions, microscopy, and point-of-care testing at the patient’s bedside.
Clinical Rotation for MLS Program in Storrs
Currently, the laboratory hosts an annual clinical rotation for students in the UConn Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) program in Storrs, CT. It combines practical experience working with laboratory professionals and the theory learned throughout the program in areas such as Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Special Chemistry, Special Coagulation, and Cystic Fibrosis testing. We have developed a successful program that equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their careers.
Expanded Opportunities for Higher Education
In 2025, UConn Health Laboratory Medicine expanded our student educational opportunities by partnering with Tunxis Community College as an affiliated site for Phlebotomy students. Our Anatomic Pathology Cytology Department also welcomes students as an affiliated site with Rutgers University.
