Surgical Pathology

Surgical pathology is the analysis of tissues removed from living patients during surgery or procedure to make a diagnosis. Surgical pathology involves gross examinations (performed by a team of ASCP-certified physician assistants), microscopic examinations, and ancillary tests (immunohistochemistry, special stains, and molecular testing) at the discretion of surgical pathologists who are an integral part of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. Currently, the surgical pathology service is staffed by anatomic pathologists with a range of subspecialty interests.

Subspecialty interests include:

Intraoperative consultation/frozen section service offered by surgical pathologists to perform rapid gross and/or microscopic analysis and diagnosis of tissue samples.
