Remote Desktop Connection

Note: If you are not on-site at UCONN Health Center, or if you are using the Guest WiFi network on campus, you will need to first connect to the CAM VPN.

Windows OS Logo Connect to a Virtual Machine (VM) using Remote Desktop Connection

1. Select the Start Menu icon, at the bottom left of your screen.

2. Search for “Remote Desktop Connection”.

3. Next to Computer: enter the provided hostname to your virtual machine.

4. Select the “Connect” button.

5. A Windows Security window will pop up, requesting your credentials. First select the “More choices” link, then select “Use a different account”.

6. Type your CAM username as the following: cam\username and then enter your CAM password. Select “OK”.

7. Optional: If this is a private computer and a resource you will be connecting to often, you can select the checkbox next to Remember me.

8. Your virtual machine connection should now open.

 

Saving your RDP as a Shortcut

1. Open the Remote Desktop Connection application.

2. Next to Computer: enter the provided hostname to your virtual machine.

3. Select the down arrow next to Show Options.

4. Next to User name: enter your CAM username as the following: cam\username.

5. At the bottom of the window, under Connection settings select the “Save As..” button.

6. Choose the location you would like to save your shortcut, we suggest using the Desktop.

7. Enter the name for your connection next to File name:. It is suggested to name it something descriptive, such as the hostname or URL of your virtual machine. Then select the “Save” button.

8. Your shortcut will now be saved.

9. Navigate to your shortcut location, and double-click the icon to open.

10. A Windows Security window will pop up, requesting your credentials.  Enter your CAM account password.

11. Select the checkbox next to Remember me: if you do not want to enter your password each time you open the virtual machine. Select “OK”.

12. Your virtual machine connection should now open.

 

MacOS Logo Connect to a Virtual Machine (VM) using Remote Desktop Connection

1. You will first need to download the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the Apple AppStore.

2. Once downloaded, open up the application.

3. Select the “+” button at the top of the Microsoft Remote Desktop app then, select “Add PC”.

4. Enter the following information:

  • PC name: Hostname to the VM
  • Friendly name: A descriptive name, usually the name of the VM

5. Optional: In the User account drop-down, you can enter your username and password to be saved automatically.

6. Select the “Add” button.

7. Double-click the newly added desktop.

8. If you did not enter your username or password before, ensure to enter your CAM username as: cam\username and your CAM password.

9. You may be prompted to verify the certificate. Select the “Continue” button in blue.

10. You will then be connected to your Remote Desktop session.
